And for the most interesting festival of the year and Louisiana’s greatest export to the world: Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Music Festival! Two of the genres unique to our culture are Cajun music and its offspring, Zydeco. Cajun music has its roots in the Old World traditions from Europe more than 200 years ago by the ancestors of today’s Cajun families. Relying on fiddles, guitars and accordions and crooning vocals – often in French – enjoy its distinctive sound and local flair. Zydeco evolved from Cajun, sometimes using the same instrumentation, sometimes not, but often adding a washboard, horns and other instruments to create a hybrid sound. Zydeco combines elements of many types of music, in addition to Cajun, including soul/R&B, rock, jazz, gospel and even hip-hop. Both Cajun and Zydeco will have the chance to strut their stuff during the Vieux to Do weekend.
